Evan and Jaron

at Janet Reid's house with Q95-5 9/27/00

I was lucky enough to win the contest "We'll Play Where You Say" from Evan and Jaron's web site, so on September 27, 2000 they came to my house in Bloomfield Hills, MI! People always ask how I won, so here's the story. I had signed up for email updates from their website, but for some reason I hadn't been receiving them. So my good friend Lauren would always forward them to me. At the bottom of one of the emails I noticed a little blurb that said if you wanted Evan and Jaron to play at your house, you could enter at their website. So I figured I'd enter for the heck of it, assuming they probably wouldn't be around Detroit and I'd never win. A couple weeks later I heard Q95-5 talking about it on the air, saying to email the radio station if you wanted to win. I told my roommate that I had entered a contest like that on Evan and Jaron's website a couple weeks earlier. I figured that with the radio getting involved, I'd no longer have a chance with my entry on their site - but luckily I was wrong. :)
My roommate came into one of my classes that day and told me that Q95-5 had called the apartment and asked for me that morning. They asked if I would be around the next morning. So I had a feeling they were going to call me live during their morning show and tell me I won - and they did! They called on a Tuesday morning and they wanted Evan and Jaron to play at my house on Wednesday morning. It was a bit difficult considering I was at school and not at home, but luckily home is only an hour away. Since I entered with my home address, that's where they wanted it to take place. One of the first things I did was call my mom - "Um, Mom? A lot of people are going to be coming to our house tomorrow morning..." My poor mom cleaned the house and was so great about everything. Of course that meant I wasn't going to class the next day, and I decided to tell one of my professors the truth rather than make up a lie about being sick. He was very cool about it and agreed with me that it was an excuse he'd never heard before! :) Luckily a number of friends skipped class too so they could join in on all the fun.
Wednesday morning they showed up in my driveway around 9:30 am, and I think we were all kind of in shock. :) In addition to Evan and Jaron, Rebecca and Spike from Q95-5 came, Dave from Columbia, Gary Graff of the Oakland Press, and a couple of people from the restaurant E.G. Nick's, who brought breakfast! Evan and Jaron set up and played their acoustic guitars right in our family room! Rodger was also with them playing percussion. I think my brother enjoyed it, because the sound guy had him soundcheck their guitars before they got there! It was a totally crazy experience and it's so cool of the guys to do that for their fans. It was my first time seeing them, and their voices sounded incredible live! They played 6 songs, including "Done Hangin' On Maybe", "Ready Or Not", "On the Bus", "From My Head to My Heart", and a cool version of AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long." They ended with "Crazy For This Girl" and asked us to sing along. :) Then they signed stuff and took pictures with us - they were so nice! Here are some of the pictures from that day:

Here's a picture of the banner that my friend Becca and I made to welcome the guys:

That's pretty much it! It was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had, and I have to say thanks to Q95-5 and Evan and Jaron for making it happen!
